About SIMO

The Stradbroke Island Management Organisation - SIMO - was formed in 1978 by island residents and visitors to stop the building of a proposed bridge from the mainland. Since then, SIMO has been active in fighting to maintain the island's special qualities and low-key way of life. Its members share concern for ensuring the environmentally sustainable management of the island's flora, fauna and resources such as minerals and water.

With the annual influx of visitors now exceeding 400,000, there is even greater need to promote awareness of Stradbroke's exceptional qualities: the island remains an extensive wallum area accessible to a capital city; its flora and fauna are diverse and scientifically significant; it is also a place of Aboriginal cultural significance; it has unequalled educational and recreational potential; and it offers residents and visitors the rare experience of (relatively undeveloped) coastal village life. SIMO's goal is to ensure that future planning acknowledges and safeguards these qualities.

For further information or membership enquiries contact the Secretary, SIMO, P.O. Box 8, Pt. Lookout 4183.
